Hobart handler 120 wire feed 90 amp welder and a box full of goodies including masks, clamps, valves for oxygen, argon and acetylene tanks (have them but not shown) as well as an angle grinder and other great welding and soldering stuff...now to learn to weld.

Looks like an awesome setup to start with! Welding and metal fab shops usually sell scraps of metal for really cheap. Can get all sorts of different thicknesses and edges.

Congrats and good luck. I need to make the same leap if I want to fix the rusty bits on the Cougar. I’ve got a couple of folks to help me out once I’m ready to get started.

I had that in 1987 to help me recreate a framerail on my 1973 240z. What an experience. Low and high carbon steel going together.

Can I offer two tips? I assume yes instead of waiting for a reply...
#1 Get an auto darkening helmet
#2 Welding better is easier than grinding
#3 Always get in a comfortable position to weld
I need oxy acetylene cutter cuz cutting 1/2" spring steel with an abrasive wheel on a grinder sucks!

I strongly agree w/ Frank Grimes re: auto darkening helmet. It makes life soooo much easier. You can pick up one that doesn’t suck for under $50 at Northern Tool. Be sure and buy several of the replacement front lenses while you’re at it. Over time, spatter mungs up your front lens and makes stuff hard to see. A quick replacement w/ a fresh piece of plastic makes everything new again!
Also, welding better is indeed a LOT easier than grinding.

Hobart, that brings back memories. I was an engineering co-op there for 3 semesters. If that welder is old enough, there is a chance I touched a part of it at the factory. Never did learn to learn to weld.
